What can Iranians learn from Ratan Tata?

Ratan Tata was from the Parsi community, which came to India several centuries ago, fleeing religious persecution in their homeland – Iran.

Cut to the present. India has a thriving community of Parsis, while Iran has thriving religious persecution.

How did it come to this? This is for the Iranian masses to figure out. The tiny lot of them that came to India over 1000 years ago now runs some of the largest and most respected businesses in India. Besides the Tata group, there are several other successful business families liek Godrej, Mistry, Poonawala, Wadia and Gharda. They have thrown up some of India’s top doctors, lawyers and even musicians: Freddie Mercury and Zubin Mehta. It is said that a car owned by a Parsi commands a premium in the Indian car aftermarket, simply on the assumption that the owner would have taken superior care of the car.

It is amazing how the choices a society makes can lead to such divergent outcomes. Hope the Iranians will make some right choices in the future.
